Welcome to Weyburn, the city of Opportunity!  Weyburn boasts a healthy number of 10,484 residents, which makes Weyburn the ninth largest city in Southeastern Saskatchewan. Weyburn was founded in 1889 when a settlement started to take shape around a station house and freight shed. The story goes that Weyburn got its name on a hot summer’s afternoon, when an exploring Scot, upon venturing across the Souris River exclaimed “Wee Burn!”  Hence the community became known as Wee Burn, later changing its spelling to the present name of Weyburn. On September 1, 1913 Weyburn achieved city status.

Weyburn is the hometown of many well-known individuals. They include Dave “Tiger” Williams, former NHL player; Graham DeLaet, PGA Tour golfer; and Brendon LaBatte, Saskatchewan Roughrider.  Also hailing from Weyburn is the man credited with the establishment of Medicare, for Saskatchewan Premier Tommy Douglas, and author W.O. Mitchell who is said to have based his books “Jake and the Kid” and “Who Has Seen the Wind” on his life in Weyburn and the prairies.  The city even has the Crocus Tour based on the series “Jake and the Kid”.

The Weyburn SARCAN depot opened in June of 1988. Over the last 25 years the staff at the depot has recycled some 124,283,612 containers!  From April 1, 2012 to March 31, 2013 the Weyburn depot diverted 7,317,401 containers from the landfill. Amazing work!! Next time you find yourself in Weyburn, stop on by the SARCAN depot and say hi to Cory and the crew.
